What animals to see in the zoo?

The Austin Zoo has several animals, from reptiles to amphibians and mammals. Some that you will see are the Komodo dragon, Mexican gray wolves, ring-tailed lemurs, binturongs (bearcats), rare Indian bustards as well as many other species.

You can also find some native Texas fauna such as javelinas that are a type of peccary.

Their habitats, especially those for mammals and reptiles, have been designed to mimic their natural environments to provide them with a more comfortable stay at the zoo.

The zoo has several interactive exhibits such as the reptile house, insectarium, and aquarium. There is also a petting area where you can feed goats and sheep at certain times of the day. The aviary has many different species to check out including ducks, geese, and other waterfowls that will swim around in pools for your viewing pleasure.

Two other exhibits that are more recent additions to the zoo include a large African Savannah habitat, where you can see many different types of antelopes and gazelles as well as zebras too, plus an Australian Outback area where kangaroos roam freely.

Shops and restaurants

Restaurants and shops around the zoo area also often have deals for those with zoo memberships.

The Austin Zoo is much more than a zoo. It's an educational center, conservation area, and sanctuary for many animals who have been abandoned or abused. It has the distinction of being the largest facility in Texas to be accredited by the American Sanctuary Association.
